The University of Northampton’s radio station, NU Radio, will be launching this Summer Term. Since October, we have been working flat out to make sure that we produce high quality and creative content that will inform and entertain the students and staff of Northampton University.
As Editor, it’s been a privilege to train and build up what is now a strong team of about 20 people with more joining every week. With this, we will be broadcasting a daily Monday-Friday news programme as well as providing specialist music, arts and sports programmes for the listeners so there’s something for everyone.
When the group first started, we had people from many different courses from Acting to English and then onto Geography and I feel this shows the beauty of NU Radio. Everyone’s unique talents have an opportunity to shine threw and I have made sure that these opportunities are there whether it’s in presenting, reporting, producing or behind the scenes.
Kilian McIntosh a first year BA Acting student said, “NU Radio has given me the opportunity to explore and reach new potential that I thought was not possible. It has also allowed me to try new skills like presenting and producing which are skills I would not be able to learn on my course”.
During the past few months we have been focusing on building up from scratch the station and NU Radio has even been lucky enough to have guest speakers Mark Whall and Jon Wilkinson in from BBC Radio Northampton to talk about their experiences in radio and to provide extra training.
Matt Mays a second year Educational Studies and Journalism student commented, “The speakers were really useful. It gave us the insight from the guys who have been there and experienced radio for years. Their advice was priceless and their support for us has been second to none”.
With the launch fast approaching, we are now focusing on getting all of the content together so when we go live, people can tune in to get all of the latest University and local news, sporting updates and updates on specialist topics.
Myself and the team are buzzing and everyone’s excited about the up and coming launch so hope to see you there and if you’re interested in being apart of NU Radio, please don’t hesitate to contact me at: NURadioeditor@northamptonunion.com.
