Societies & You

By getting involved in a society committee you can really separate yourself from the competition with employers. It’s never too early to start thinking about the job you might want when you leave and 78% of employers say they would rather employ someone with voluntary experience, such as that gained from involvement in a society committee, than those without.

By getting involved in a committee you’ll learn transferable skills such as:

  • Leadership
  • Communication
  • Presentation skills and public speaking
  • Time management
  • Lobbying
  • Handling budgets
  • Event management
  • Problem solving
  • Stress management
  • Negotiation and diplomacy

These are skills you can draw upon in job interviews and outside of university!

Typical committee positions include:

  • President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Social Secretary
  • Event Organiser
  • Fresher Engagement Officer
  • Volunteer Coordinator

But if there is a need for any dedicated position in your society you can create a position to fill it. Just get in touch with our Societies & Volunteering Coordinator on how to add a committee position.
