Your Union

Elections 2010

Welcome

Thanks for taking an interest in becoming part of the leadership of the Union.  Contained in this document are some procedures, job descriptions of the roles available and the regulations that oversee the election.

Participating in the elections is an opportunity to raise issues and suggest new ways of improving the lives of your fellow students.  Even if a candidate is unsuccessful in gaining office – it may be that their ideas will still be implemented by others.I’ve gained huge amounts of great experience from my involvement in the Students’ Union, developed skills that I didn’t realise I had and made hundreds of new friends from all over the world.

The current officers have all outlined the typical responsibilities and activities of their posts later on in this document, I think it truly outlines our experiences and we hope it gives you a flavour of what you may be getting yourselves into.As well as leading the work of (and being ultimately responsible for) a £900,000 charity, there is a balance in the form of accountability and responsibility.

The Executive are accountable to the membership and external regulators. The NUS Regional Officer, Al Powell, is the Union’s returning officer and has the ultimate say on all matters relating to elections.  He will rule on the election regulations on the rare occasions that complaints are made.  Beyond elections, Al is the Union’s principal contact with the National Union and can help explain matters of policy and information about the works & campaigns of the NUS.

At the end of this pack is the Nomination form.  It must be completed and submitted before 4 pm on the 11th of February.  It is a candidate’s responsibility to hand in a form that is complete and in order.  The election staff will only check validity after the close of nominations – so there is no second chance to get this right.

The rest of the pack is fairly self explanatory, if you have any questions beyond the information here, please ask me, come to the question and answer sessions, or ask the Union General Manager.

Good Luck!

Eamon - Union President 2009-2010

Statement from the Returning Officer 26-2-10

Returning Officer Statement, Northampton Students' Union Elections 2010.

As Returning Officer in the Northampton Students' Union Executive Elections 2010 I have taken the decision to suspend the count and consequently the election result for the position of Vice President Student Development.

On starting to sort and count the total number of ballot papers it  was noted that there were significant enough discrepancies to warrant a suspension of the count and the launch of a subsequent investigation.

The candidates have been told and will be kept informed of any developments.

I am satisfied that all other elections were free and fair and have  been returned.
